Freebies-Wallpaper Of The Month-Fallout 3

May 11, 2008 – 4:04 pm

Normally I would talk about what I had on my ipod today, but Vista messed up on me and ruined everything (I ‘ll explain what happen in this weeks “I Hate Vista Article”). So I went with plan B, feature my Wallpaper of the month since I forgot to talk about it last week.

To honor the upcoming awesome RPG, Fallout 3, I decided to download a picture of one of the game’s characters and set that picture as my desktop background. If you want this background to, then visit this URL.

Freebies-Wordpress Addons-Refer Notes 1.0

May 11, 2008 – 4:02 pm

Category: Features
Author: Brad Bodine
Description: Refer notes is a Wordpress plugin that is used to display a custom welcome message to site visitors who are referred to your site from other specific site domains such as Digg, Reddit and Stumbleupon.
When a visitor comes to your site from one of the many social networks, a message will be displayed across the top or your site welcoming them from the site that sent them to you. For example, if a user stumbled to your site from stumbleupon, a message saying,”Welcome Stumbleupon user! If you like this article please consider giving us a thumbs up. Thanks!” Each message can be customized to say anything you want.
Options are available for styling your message and the message container. When activated the container sits accross the top of your page and is fixed so it stays present even if the visitor scrolls down the page. The container has a close button that will allow the visitor to slide it up and out of view.
Currently supports more than 20 social websites and 3 search engines. There are 5 custom referrals that can be added so if one of the sites you would like to support is not here you can quickly add it through the options page.
Alternately, you can use the New User option to display a message to any site visitor being referred to your site from any other site except your own because you don’t want it popping up every time change pages around your site.
Some sites like Digg and Reddit support custom buttons to display the current Diggs or Points for a specific page or article. Options are available to use a large or small button or disable this feature all together. Most current sites include a custom favicon type icon specific to the referral site.

Freebies-Wordpress Addons-Yet another threaded Comments Plugin 0.6

May 7, 2008 – 4:02 pm

Here’s another Wordpress plugin I found from Wordpress Plugin Database
Category: Admin Tools >> Enhancements
Author: Joachim Praetorius
Description: YATCP allows to use threaded Comments in Wordpress. You only need to alter one line of PHP in the template manually, all other needed files are included. Nevertheless YATCP has been made flexible, so you can adapt it to your needs easily.

[Download] [Plugin Page]

New in this version:
- Complete Internationalization using the WP standard gettext methods (so adapting to languages is easier). Changes provided by Sergey Biryukov
- Merge of the nesting and nonnesting Comments display in a single PHP File. Also a patch provided by Sergey Biryukov
- Added the possibility to completely exclude Trackbacks/Pingbacks from display in the List of Comments. This behaviour can be enabled/disabled in the Options Page of YATCP
- Added the possibility to show the non-nesting remark (Comments won’t nest below this level) only on the first comment reaching maximum depth or on all comments, where replies won’t nest.
- Most of the new Code is this time an external patch submitted by Sergey Biryukov. Many thanks for sharing.

Microsoft News-Quicktime Flaw In Windows Could Be Dangerous

May 6, 2008 – 4:04 pm

Windows Media Player is the only video player that windows users can use in order to watch videos. It seems unlikely that anyone would use Quicktime to watch videos in Windows, since it’s mostly use for Apple computers.

This should give you a reason why you shouldn’t use it. According to GNUCitizen’s blog, the exploit involves a maliciously crafted media file. When a user opens the file, which can be hosted on a Web site, the vulnerability in QuickTime allows the hacker to take complete control of the machine, according to Petko D. Petkov, known to the hacking community as “pdp.” He later made the following statements.

“I highly doubt that anyone knows how to exploit this vulnerability,” Petkov said. “I haven’t shared the details with anyone, and the actual vulnerability is different enough to be rather challenging for even some of the most gifted hackers out there.”

Petkov said that he contacted Apple on April 28th.
